Temazcal
The origins of Temazcal
The word Temazcal has ancient Mesoamerican origins, meaning “house of heat” or “temple of warm stones,” and was used in Aztec and Mayan cultures to heal and purify the mind, body and soul. The ceremony represents a return to the womb of Mother Earth, and is still used today in many parts of Mexico and Central America for spiritual and health reasons. The purpose of the Temazcal is to be reborn, by balancing participant’s wisdom, awareness and will. The ritual has endless physiological and psychological benefits, and works as an excellent stress reliever because it detoxifies and regenerates cells.
Our resort’s spiritual ceremony
Our Temazcal ceremonies are led by an Intercessor, or healer, and are one hour long. The ritual will begin with a blessing from the Intercessor, and one by one, guests will enter the Temazcal structure, sitting in a circle for the healing ceremony. The shelter will be filled with hot stones and the Intercessor will guide participants through the spiritual ritual, involving aromas, herbal steams, sounds and sensations. Afterwards, we recommend participants take a cold shower to regulate body temperature, rest, and rehydrate, to allow the body and mind to process the experience.
